*U.S.C.G
ADVISORIES: The Naval Protection Zone (NVPZ)
The NVPZ provides for the regulation of vessel traffic in the vicinity of
U.S. naval vessels in the navigable waters of the U.S. What does this
mean? This means that all vessels must operate at minimum speed within
500 yards of any U.S. naval vessel and proceed as directed by the
official patrol. The official patrol are the Coast Guard vessels on scene
with flashing blue lights you will see escorting a larger U.S. naval
vessel. The NVPZ also makes it illegal to approach with 100 yards of a
U.S. naval vessel. What do you need to do to if you pass within 100 yards
of a U.S. naval vessel? If you need to pass within 100 yards of a U.S.
naval vessel in order to ensure a safe passage in accordance with the
Navigation Rules, you must contact the U.S. naval vessel or the Coast
Guard escort vessel on VHF-FM channel 16 for permission to pass.
The bottom line is: if you see a large U. S. naval ship being escorted by
smaller Coast Guard boats with flashing blue lights, then stay out of the
way if at all possible! This means they are likely enforcing the NVPZ.
